In Afropean, Al Varo Tavares D’Guilherme brings different signs, figures and cultural references into a shared pictorial space without allowing them to settle into a single order. The title itself joins African and European identifications, challenging the expectation that identity must belong clearly to one geography, culture or history.

D’Guilherme’s layered visual language reflects an identity formed through the coexistence of different cultural realities. Figures, symbols and references overlap, interrupt and transform one another, allowing several histories to remain present at the same time. Rather than treating cultural difference as something that must eventually be reconciled, the work allows multiplicity itself to become a condition of identity.

Within Negotiating Belonging, Afropean speaks to the experience of belonging across more than one cultural and geographical space. Movement, encounter and inherited histories do not necessarily replace one identity with another; they can produce something new between them. The work therefore resists the demand to choose a single origin or affiliation. Instead, it presents belonging as a continuous negotiation between the cultures we inherit, the places we encounter and the identities we construct through them – an identity capable of containing difference without having to resolve it.
